Structured Learning Drives Success
There are hundreds positions in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The complexity and disorganization of jiu jitsu, in general, is the primary reason more than 99% of people who start jiu jitsu never make it to black belt. The Gracie Master Cycle® framework is the key to a curriculum structure that drives simplicity, retention, and understanding that makes learning more fun and effective.
The Master Cycle® groups techniques into 7 positional chapters, and we spend 2-3 months studying a variety of situations, moves, and position variations from each chapter. This allows for a deep understanding of each positional chapter before moving on to the next, and it simplifies the journey to black belt making it more accessible for more people.
3 Modes Of Training
1) Gi Training
Wearing a Gi or kimono is an essential mode of training in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Because people can grab and use the gi, it makes practice more technical because it reduces the effectiveness of using strength or athleticism to escape positions. The also a great proxy for real street attire because it simulates pants, shirt, and jacket/sweatshirt quite well.
2) No-Gi Training
No-Gi Training or submission grappling is a supplemental component to training. With fewer grips, athleticism plays a larger role, and the speed of the sparring session is increased greatly. This is an important part of development because it forces students to find new ways to apply GJJ techniques without the assistance of a Gi.
3) Fight Simulation
Every week, Gracie Jiu Jitsu incorporates a dedicated class to Fight Simulation. The students wear protective 4oz fingerless gloves and incorporate striking into the drills and live rolling session. The purpose is to simulate an real-life fight where you have to defend against a striking opponent. This is one of the main differences between GJJ and BJJ training.
